The same way a thermos knows when to keep the drink cold or hot.

Solid bars work the same in both tension and compression. Flexible bars work mainly in tension (I have no idea how much compressive strength they would have). Hence if the strut towers want to angle inwards the flexible bar will allow that (or limit it less than solid bars), but if they want to angle outward the flexible bar will prevent that.
