You're right. I'm all for the sake of safety. Can't really enjoy a race if your favorite driver busts into flames after falling from the edge of a cliff. But it gave the sport that extra heat (See what I did there) in order to put the extra effort to wake up early in the morning or stay up late to watch a race on the other side of the world, and it was worth it because you never knew what would happen.

I have read that in the early days of F1 drivers would go out partying the night before because they knew they might not make it to the end of the race alive.
