I used to play this game in high-school called Ragnarok Online. MMORPG. Characters were very anime-ish and you get to chat or if you had a Ventrilo channel you could do voice. Made some good friendships, but I started noticing this pattern that people that I added on social media, had anime girls or characters as their avatar. If the guy was decent looking, it was a normal profile picture. Same for a girl. Then the stereotypical Weebs/Nerds both M and F, had the anime character avatar. You had to do some digging to find out how they really looked IRL.
