The vaccines do a good job at preventing someone from catching most of the strains of covid-19 that currently exist. That's why Omicron is the prevalent strain now, because it has evolved in a way that allows it to overcome defenses put in place by vaccines. All the other strains can't get a foothold and die out.
As mentioned, we were too slow to adopt and distribute the vaccines to the rest of the world. But the consolation prize to being vaccinated is the body starts attacking the virus more quickly, reducing the severity of disease.
