Factory paint is far from perfect - usually looks like an orange peel. I didn't do a full-on color sand, but I definitely did a fair amount of polishing before my ceramic went on.
Got a buddy who's considering doing ceramic as a side-hustle who knows how to color sand. I told him if he wants to give it a shot he's welcome to use my GR86 as advertising if he wants to color sand it for me for less than it'd cost me to get it done elsewhere.
Factory paint isn't flat/smooth. If you get it perfectly smooth before you put PPF and/or ceramic on it, you end up with a finish so reflective that it looks like you could jump right into it. But it's a lot of labor to polish that orange peel off. Probably 90% of the cost of a good ceramic coating is the labor for the paint correction. Actually applying the ceramic is super easy.
