Afci's are more advanced gfci's. GFI's just compare power in vs. power out, too much of a difference(like someone getting shocked and making a new alternative path for power), they turn off.

Afci's work on voodoo and magic where they use basic computer logic that is supposed to detect a problem before it's really a problem. And it works just as well as that sounds, as devices turning on and off and changing power levels tend to look electrically similar to the wiring problems the breakers are supposed to protect and shut off for.

I haven't heard anything of late about it, but there were rumors flying for a little while about a policy to make the main panel breaker an AFCI... Would end up easier to just turn the whole house off when you're not using it...
