Take a long screwdriver and put it to the valve covers, and the handle to your ear to listen for vibration. I barely hear any noise from the valvetrain, its very quiet in there. Use this method to listen around the different parts of the engine, like the fuel pump and injectors, and the transmission.

Another source of noise might be the clutch throw out bearing. A few years ago I was also investigating a weird tapping sound on revs, and it turned out that it was clutch bearing rattle. I'm on my 3rd bearing now!
