I don't remember at what temperature the previous BRZ/GT86s start pulling the timing at..if the computer doesn't read the oil temps maybe it was based on Coolant Temps
It's an actual sensor in the timing cover next to the oil pressure switch. Not certain if the new gen uses oil temp in timing tables. Coolant for sure. Most STi models start pulling timing at 214*, but that's F/I.

From product dyno testing with a 15 WRX with this same setup, we'd generally see a 20* difference from the OEM sensor to the sump, with the sump being the colder of the two.
