I did this back in 2013 since the BRZ (at the time) was in short supply and sell price was close to MSRP (or sometimes even higher).
I ended up buying from Heuberger in Colorado Springs and got a fun experience out of it. The process for importing a new car into California was also easy, but I have the benefit of having done this many times before...
Obviously the procedure varies from state to state, but since California is the most complicated it still is pretty valid.
