Consumer reports kind of went on a witchhunt after a seat from recaro they tested ‘failed’ their tests. They said the seatback broke during their impact testing, which was done at significantly higher speed than the normal car seat testing. They also didn’t understand that the seatbacks were designed to fail in a controlled fashion as a mechanical load limiter similar to how the inertia reel for your seatbelt works. They have perforations that encourage the shell ripping where the belts mount, again, in a controlled fashion, so your kid doesn’t need a HANS device to come out of it without a neck injury.

The whole thing was very blown out of proportion and recaro was forced to recall the seats, and said fuck it, we’re pulling out of this market. As someone who has a background in crash mechanics it was very frustrating to see one of the few companies that was being innovative when it comes to designing these kind of mechanisms into their seats forced out of the US market.
