Let's remember that the second gen cars are an improvement but every other car has improved in the last 8 years as well. The Twins did not not get better in isolation so whatever was "faster", "more practical" or whatever then would still apply now.
Personally the 2nd gen cars have finally bested the s2000 in performance, the s2000 has always been a benchmark car for me. It's quicker than the s2000, ND miata, and the previous gen cars in a straight line, and there's not much left to compete against in this segment / price point, so I don't see reviewers complaining much about "power" going forward.

Plus we are approaching the end of ICE cars, so to me at least, the 2nd gen feels like a swan song to affordable, rwd, japanese sports cars of yesteryear as we approach the EV future whether we like it or not. For example using myself, I had to have this car, I grew up on 90's rwd shit boxes, the GR86/BRZ feel like the last of their kind. Maybe my reaction is misplaced, but I really think this gen will be a classic 10-15 years from now, maybe sooner depending how the EV / hybridization push continues.
