My guess would be that consumer surveys determined that people found the big fender flares and fender vents a bit too boy racer for mainstream buyers. Australians want AWD, but perhaps this wagon needs to fit a broader demographic than an STI would.

It's toned down, which seems appropriate for more mature buyers.

I'm in my 50's, but I still took the optional trunk wing when ordering my STI. Why not, people can laugh all they want but my car actually generates rear downforce at highway speed, making is slightly more stable. The tradeoff? Increased drag and some people rolling their eyes at the "ricewing". Subaru was FHI which was originally Nakajima, so they have a history with wings.
In fact, I saw a kamikaze plane (no landing gear) built by Nakajima right at the end of the war. This particular one is in the Pima Air and Space museum in Tucson. Fortunately, although Nakajima was commissioned to build this, they were never deployed. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, provided most of the aircraft for the war including the Zero fighters.
