If you want any kind of real midbass from your door speakers, you need to seal them as well as possible. I also like to cover as much of the door skin as possible to cut down on rattles and resonance. Some people will tell you that only 25% of a panel needs to be covered, some will add multiple layers. I just try to cover as much as I can with one layer.
The roof, quarter panels and the rest of the car I just rap my knuckles on. Just go around your car and knock on any panel, it will have a tinny, hollow , clank to it. A well dampened panel will have a solid thud when you knock on it. And here weight comes into play. I could of added a ton more and made it Lexus like, but I settle on Camry like. And this is just dampener, if you get into sound deadener, you can add a ton of weight, but make it like a tomb. Some of the sound deadener weighs a pound per foot.
