Putting together a key finder?

Hey guys,

I did some renovation work at home for a few months, and appear to have lost one of my car's keys. Having push-button start, this means a replacement is expensive (600USD+ w/ tax), so I'd first like to be sure it's not somewhere in the vicinity.

I don't want to empty the whole appartement searching for that key, so I was wondering if one can put together a "key finding" device that scans the environment (the way the car does), looking for a valid key.
This is probably a sensitive topic as I can imagine less-than-reputable uses for such a device, but could it be done nonetheless? I'm not looking to acquire any data from the key (it's my own car after all), all I want to know is whether it's around.

BR,
Alex
