If you get around to checking the voltage drop on the ground wire here is a reference to verify your readings. This is a normal start of mine. Measurement was read between battery negative terminal and engine(alternator).

As you see during start there is about a .41v drop on the negative lead. My guess is about a 150 amp spike(I did not measure amps). If your starter was shorted and put a 300+ amp load you would get around a 1 volt drop.
