I've never had issues with the OEM nuts, I always thread it fully by hand before even using a ratchet.

Living here in the Chicago area and having dedicated snow tires,I've removed my wheels at least twice per year for the past 5 years and have never had an isssue with my studs. I suspect the problems is that people overtighten the lugs. They are only supposed to be torqued 89 ft/lbs. I'd be willing to bet that most that snap are going way past that torque number.
