Since it WAS counting distance, and the trip meter and speed are still working, it sounds like an internal issue, all those things are going to get calculated from the vehicle speed data coming in over CAN bus.

I guess the only thing you could try is disconnect both battery cables and short them together (keeping them away from the actual battery posts) and leaving it like that for a few minutes to actually kill the power and drain any caps that may be keeping computer memory alive.

Fun anecdote: A few years ago a guy I know had a Dodge Journey and after a night of having left the lights on, the battery fell completely flat. Once it was jump started back to life, the odometer had actually reset to zero but incremented fine like nothing had gone wrong. All in all the car had lost about 30000km by accident.

So these kinds of computer errors do happen sometimes
