Muffler Stainless Steel

Mufflers and pipes are often made of 409 stainless steel by manufacturers. it has a lot less nickel so it is much cheaper. It does surface rust and will flake off but does not often get holes like carbon steel pipes.
The first uses of 409 in exhaust systems was probably on industrial exhaust systems like for industrial gas turbines. Silencers for gas turbines is where I first saw it.
