On my 2017, I did not use the warranty for anything engine related. The car was previously leased and had 26k when I got it and has 33k now.
What the warranty was used for was a new spoiler for rattling issues, a new battery when the old one died in mid-2019, and the passenger side seat cover was re-done because of wrinkling (and has wrinkled again).
Usually speaking and especially with this car, if you engine blows within 3 years or <30k miles, you're doing something wrong. Maybe the car is being extensively tracked, no oil cooler, only using Subaru oil. That could possibly cause an issue... and even then, unlikely in the first 3 years.
I did have a buddy blow the engine in his 2013 WRX at 5k miles. That was covered under warranty and was likely a defect. However, the engine blew 2 times after that also because he drives like a madman and autocrosses it extensively (actually won nationals in 2019 in it). I think it failed around 30-40k and then again at 70k. Once from bad fuel and racing it, then again after than autocross event and going WOT to pass someone on the highway on the way home. Different car (EJ25 and turbo) and really beating on it.
