I think another significant hurdle for Toyota is simply producing a low volume car in any of their facilities which have been set up for extremely high volumes. Corollas and RAV4s sell at extremely consistent and predictable rates, sports cars do not. I don’t think they want to commit assembly line capacity (and uncertainty) from their facilities to these kinds of cars, which is why they let Subaru and Magna Steyr build them for them.
