early model nd but driving an 86 with stock suspension felt more planted, precise, playful in the back and shifting was way more fun in 86. feel in the corners, speed and level of confidence coming out of them is way more of a priority than straight line speed for me!

I have test driven both back to back (the ND1 version of the Miata) on 2 occasions, and while I agree with much of what you say here (although I preferred the Miata's shifter) the Miata did have one notable advantage that was evident from even a modest drive - the fact that it is about 450 lbs lighter. My own car splits the weight difference, and when I drove the 86 the added weight was evident. I am hoping the GR86 with its much improved rigidity feels a bit lighter on its feet.
