i would've expected you being in the UK to already know this! it apparently originated in england..

they used to breed a dog specifically to turn meat in front of a fire--they were a terrier variation with short stocky legs and high energy. there'd be a hamster wheel mounted up near the fire place connected by a chain to the spit. whenever they wanted to roast meat, they'd put the dog up there to walk the wheel and spin the meat.
