I was 10 and there was a lot of stuff to do before getting to the disks.
First was the crank start. Then, driving the tractor from my Brother-in-laws to my parents place and back again. That required several up shifts with a non synchromesh transmission. I learned to pull away from a dead stop in 3rd but always stalled it if I tried 4th.
As to farming, you started by turning over the sod with the plow. Then break up the furrows with the discs. Followed by the cultivator and lastly drag harrows. In between each I'd have to clear out all the rocks that came to the surface. I loved any part of farming that let me drive the tractor. Everything else was too much like work. Drive the hay wagon, great! Loading the hay, heck with that!!!
