Thats because most people are looking in the direction of on coming traffic since thats where the danger is. I dont think he expected another car to try and sneak past him.

Agree I would never have pulled in beside him.
But...
You are always supposed to ensure at you are clear in ALL directions (even behind you) before you move a vehicle. Celica probably should not have been where he was but he would have been obvious if the driver had at least glanced in that direction. The danger can be
anyplace and focusing on only one direction is what causes accidents such as this.
Doubt there are stats but I would guess that the first words said at many (most?) accidents are "I didn't even see them". This should actually read "I didn't even look there".
