I personally knew someone who did this to a lesser scale and without the threat. They were dissatisfied at work because their supervisor ignored them and no on really cared about the project he was on, so he started interviewing and found a new job...
But he didn't bother to resign, he just never went back to the old job and he kept getting checks auto deposited. This went on for over 4 years! I always wondered if the supervisor was so embarrassed by not noticing/not doing their job that they just said he quit. Nothing happened, the checks just stopped. No one said a thing!
