Was somewhat more of a 986/996 problem much more so than 987.1/997.1. Earlier dual-row bearings and later bigger 9x7.1 single-row bearings had a lower failure rate. 2001-2005 according to my sources had the highest failure rates, reportedly on the order of 8-10%.

Add to the IMS failures D-chunk, bore-scoring, and poor oiling (one of our own lost his 987.1 Cayman S to this), those engines were kinda garbage...

Different league of problem levels vs. 1qt/1000 mile oil consumption.
