the media has a lot more power than you apparently think.
for a very long time, my parents and grandparents would stay inside if the news weatherman said it was going to rain. even if it was sunny, with no clouds all day.
they finally started doing their own due diligence once they got tired of me laughing at them.
i noticed it the most around the time of george floyd. of course, there's always been those undercurrents and situations within our nation, but there was really nothing specifically different other than media attention(news, and social) about that situation over thousands of similar situations that happened in years before.
most people seem to recognize and acknowledge that the monoliths of the internet have created echo chambers of interest groups. i see it all the time in my youtube recomendations-- it keeps recommending video's from the same content creators, because it's what i like. but i also know there's got to be more than 10 people generating content for youtube. as time goes on, youtube's history with me becomes more complete, and it becomes harder and harder for me to search for content outside of that which i've already expressed an interest in.
i've actually gone to using bing from time to time to search for things simply because it has less of my past, and will generate more 'raw' results sometimes.
the problems with echo chambers is a lack of progress from where one already stands. which is ironic, as all these recent echo chambers are all about progress moving from where we stand...
