I wouldn't say that many Americans' idea of liberty is misunderstood - I'd say it's distorted. Many of my fellows seem to think "1) that Liberty means I can do anything I want to do and that any restrictions the scope of "anything I want" is a fundamental Constitutional violation; and 2) that applies only to me."
It used to be the case that some defined liberty as the freedom to swing my arm as long as it does not contact your nose. Some us seem to have abandoned that. We're more than happy to allow the contents of our sinuses to blow out straight into others noses and any attempt to stop them is met with defiance.
