I did pick up the VHT Primer also just in case, but I put back the clear coat - I dont need the gloss protection. Thanks in advance!

Pretty much any heavy duty degreaser will be fine. I personally like the Simple Green . Rinse it off well though. You can rinse the engine bay by wrapping plastic bags around the battery, fuse box and alternator. Let it dry well then wipe down the surface to be painted with the alcohol. Then paint with several mist coats. Don't try to get 100% coverage on your fist pass that is how you end up with runs and adhesion issues.
On a purely personal opinion and subjective note don't go nuts and paint everything that doesn't move orange. A couple of selected items in balance will have a better cosmetic impact (again in my eyes) than every single cover and surface.
