If you need to brake, it's better to slow down a bit very early so you get more time before getting to the line of cars, so hopefully they start moving before you need to slow down too much.

I think slowing down in neutral is a no no O_O at least that's what I saw in another thread...but I wouldn't really know since I don't even have my license yet LOL. I think if you are in neutral and not pressing your clutch in it doesn't hurt your clutch though.
