Probably just wants a differentiation thats bigger than the 86 vs BRZ currently is (which is weird because they started off driving a bit different tuning wise but somewhat converged to be similar with the 2017 refresh)

This exactly. There is no way in hell we will see any major differences between the two cars. Minor tuning - likely more in the suspension than power train, and some differences styling is what we'll likely see.
