Well, back-in-the-day, I used to jack up the car spin the wheel to listen for a grinding sound, then try to move the wheel top-to-bottom to feel whether it is loose.

Sometimes, one can tell by driving down a smooth road and turn the steering wheel from side to side and see if the bearing screams at you.

OR, do it the humfrz way, take the car into a shop and ask them to check the wheel bearings and replace them if necessary -
