Does your friend mean the gambling nature of Las Vegas? If so, that would be Macao outside of Ju-jian river. Guangzhou is the capitol of the province. Shenzhen was just a experimental land near Hong Kong probably 30 years ago for their first trial of capitalism, and it went well.

In fact, there are so many dialects of Chinese. Which ones are you referring (Cantonese and Mandarin)?
