Depends on the commodity, customer contract and the freight type (truck load, LTL, etc). Doing relays introduces more murphy into the equation and exposes the carrier to potential claims if the agreed transit timeline isn't met, and if chain of custody agreements aren't met.
The above scenario might be only a small part of the overall amount of freight moved on a daily basis in the US alone, but it's still a significant $ amount and number of trucks. I used to plan/coordinate 200+ trucks a day of such freight 6 days a week.
