You are probably right that Honda is selling these cars to people that aren't historically Type-R fans. As in basically every other way, Honda is trying their best to become as boring as Toyota is in the US. $$ over anything else. But hey, I appreciate that as a shareholder.

Well that's just all together a shitty situation then. Don't blame you for feeling ways about Honda, I would too.
And as unfortunate as it may be, what sells is what we're going to get, as an enthusiast, I don't like this, but the current CTR meets my needs, mostly. I would like to have a more hardcore, lighter, smaller CTR, but beggars can't be choosers. Delete the tech in the car, give me basic bluetooth and that's it, make it a 2dr 2+2 like old days, make it light and lower the roof line a bit, keep some of the current look (ie front end, edges very edgy me like, big wing, etc)...
