Look how far back they moved the engine. They cut the firewall to recess it back. If they didn't lower the engine then they would have lost the top of the firewall. Also, the engine doesn't look to be centered over the subframe, which means the subframe would need to be lowered to avoid the oil pan.
It looks to me like they wanted to move the motor as far back as possible, so they needed to make accommodations for that reason, which is more about their choice creating problems and less about the engine height.
