As far as I can tell, the "1x" on most variable scopes is either something like 1.3 or has a distorted fisheye effect. A 1x fixed scope should behave more like a red dot, having a nice big "eye box" and low distortion.
I recall as a kid shooting a 22LR rifle with a scope on it at a range, and it actually wasn't easy at all to hit the bullseye at just 25m. The magnification just made it more obvious that my hands weren't steady lol.

A scope has a limited eye relief and is typically not as quick a simple red dot/holo sight. If I was gonna use a scope, I'd at least want something that gives me some extra benefit over a standard 1x sight. Having the ability to switch between a 1x and something higher is nice when using such an optic.
I still prefer the speed from a red dot, so I'll almost always choose a red dot + magnifier over an LPVO. I can use the red dot as normal and the flip the magnifier into the optic line when needed. Then flip out of the way again for CQs again.
If you could, see if you can take a look at a few different optics in person. A lot of the major retail stores will have some out on display and there shouldn't be much issue in taking one out for you to see.
