My 2 cents worth:
I ordered a GTS at the end of June, laid down $1k deposit, told to expect delivery around Dec/Jan
Last week got really pee'd off with the fact that Toyota were deleting the spare wheel and I'd end up with the inflation kit.
Rang around local dealers and found an 86 that was currently being built and not sold.
Contacted my first dealer and got the run around and they weren't going to let me out of the contract until I told them that I knew about the wheel deletion and spec change. Only then did they capitulate and give me my money back.

I wouldn't be laying down two deposits unless you have it in writing that you can back out of the contract if you secure another car somewhere else.
