So even if it ends with this new variant and no one buys it, it is still quite respectable for Toyota to do something different when they could've probably left the twins in their original state even before the 17+ updates and no one would've batted an eye.

I have never said that I felt they should appease the masses and make millions of them. In fact I would hate that. I said "If they wanted to sell more of them". They can't support declining numbers forever. The first 3 years these cars sold like mad. It was easy since there was no used base to compete with. You can almost see the exact month that all the first leases came up for sale since the new sales started to drop off. As more used came up the fewer new they made and sold. They knew it would happen and planned production numbers around it.
So, now go take a look at the sales numbers when the 17s came out. They took a nosedive and never really came back to any real decent numbers.
How many times do you think that can happen before they just pack it in?
They NEED
good numbers to keep making it no matter how much .000001% of the driving population likes them.
The whole thing is that they know perfectly well what they are planning while we still don't even know a single fact about the next much less what will or will not follow that. Even these small changes cost them millions and if the costs are not covered the shareholders will eventually say "ENOUGH".
No they are not looking to make money on them but contrary to the marketing hype and fanboi wet dreams they are not making them for some altruistic "we just love sports cars" reason either.
All in all if they just keep shoehorning very similar cars into the market they will run out of interested buyers and that will be that.
