Have you tried charging the battery on a battery charger?
What does the voltage read at the battery?
The only way a bad alternator could stop a car on the highway is if it stopped charging the battery and the battery used up all its juice trying to keep the engine running.
When you jumped the car, did you connect the battery cables then let the other vehicle run for a few minutes?
