All cars are expensive, depending on your income level. Used, off lease, CPO are still expensive.

Tcoat and others have said, each car in your "fleet" adds expense, and the majority of people have better things to spend their money on so every car purchase is a compromise. If you bought a vehicle for every purpose you need one for, you'd have to own a dozen. Examples:
Truck for hauling stuff too messy or tall for a car
Motorcycle when you are by yourself and its just a quick trip
commuter car, probably electric, for back and forth for work. Maybe an eBike?
family/friend hauler for when you have more people than seats
etc...
Even if you have multiple cars, each one likely serves more than one purpose and is a compromise between those missions.
