All cars are expensive, depending on your income level. Used, off lease, CPO are still expensive.

As @Tcoat and others have said, each car in your "fleet" adds expense, and the majority of people have better things to spend their money on so every car purchase is a compromise. If you bought a vehicle for every purpose you need one for, you'd have to own a dozen. Examples:

Truck for hauling stuff too messy or tall for a car
Motorcycle when you are by yourself and its just a quick trip
commuter car, probably electric, for back and forth for work. Maybe an eBike?
family/friend hauler for when you have more people than seats
etc...

Even if you have multiple cars, each one likely serves more than one purpose and is a compromise between those missions.
