Wheels:
Stick with a 17x7 or 17x8 if you really want to go wider. Keep offset as close to stock as possible or you will mess up your effective spring and damping rates. Obviously keep it 5x100. Other than that, there's the style/cost/weight trade off to consider. Weight is an important consideration. I recommend tirerack.com for wheel shopping.
Tires:
Look for articles on tirerack.com and do your research as to what performance level of tires you think you want. Plenty of comparisons and technical info there. As for size, that depends on the size of the wheel. Both 215/45 and 225/45 work on 17x7 wheels I can tell you that much. Again, style/weight/performance/cost play important factors and those differ with taste.
