If worst comes to worst, you can pull the shifter column. It can be done from within the cabin, though you'll likely need a new rubber dust cover for the linkage because it won't come off without a real fight (and potentially getting torn due to age and the rough process).

Haven't done the de-pinning myself so I don't have real insight here. From what I've observed from other people, the OEM pin is hollow and you've potentially flared it making it difficult to extract.
