turn it on, set it to 200 ohms (Ω), install the leads in the 'COM', and 'VΩmA' ports. it will initially show a '1' towards the left, meaning that there's more resistance than it can measure. touch the leads together, and the number will jump around on the right-- the lower the number, the better--it means less resistance.
