One time a guy cut in front of me and I had to slam in the brakes and a case of sparkling wine came flying into the back of my seat from the trunk. Luckily it didn't do any real damage.

I've got a doubled-over cargo net held in place by 4 carabiners. Two are attached to aluminum half-loops in the rear seat bracket bolt holes (having removed the bracket). The other two are connected to the upper child-seat hooks. There's a couple of pretty beefy plastic clips too, but most of forces wind up on the carabiners. Best part is I just unhook the upper ones and I have the full "seatback down" cargo space again.
I've got some pictures on my phone somewhere. I intended to put up a DIY of my rear seat delete, but never got around to it. Just need to figure out how to resize them to post...
