Having to go for a narrower than stock tire size could be negating whatever benefit you're looking for in a performance winter tire in the first place if what you want is dry grip.
My preference would be always to stick to the stock tire size of 215/45R17 for the stock 17x7 rim. Pirelli's web site says the Sottozero 3 do come in 215/45R17...
