Solution:
Take your mod money, get a cheap reliable beater car.
Then take the leftovers and you can do whatever you want without worrying about opinion.
If I have any questions about reliability or performance for a car I drive on a daily basis (especially for work or critical things), I keep it simple. My current fun car has been sitting in the garage for months because I'm too lazy to fix my suspension bushing issues (and the "fix" I came up with was to buy KW V3...)
