I've never done it either, and every time I have ever jumped a car, I put all four clamps directly to both batteries.

Yep, the older MGBs had two 6V batteries located on either side of the car under the back jump seat, under a screwed down panel and they were wired in series. Talk about a pain to jump, after you tore the jumper cables apart on one end so they would reach -
