but you learned something, and it doesn't sound like you damaged anything either! the last few times i've had to deal with 'oops' like that, there was a comma in the replacement cost!

it's a common issue-- you didn't know you were doing it wrong, so you performed the task with the belief that your method were correct and the issue was with faulty equipment being used.

it's one of the things that i work to teach new hires. if it doesn't work the first time, stop and analyze both the methods as well as the equipment. most of the time, it is an equipment issue, but occasionally, it's user misapplication of the equipment.
