We don’t even have the option of the 4 cylinder B48 Supra here in Australia. The only Supra you can buy here is the 6 cylinder B58, and it’s not far off AUD$100,000 here, which is really expensive (in comparison, an 86 starts about $35,000, a 370Z is about $55,000 and a Mustang GT is about $65,000).

is still very expensive, 86 makes a hell of a lot more sense..
Certainly does in Australia, there is a huge gap between $35k 86 here and $100k Supra. Maybe if Toyota brought the B48 here for $65k to split the difference it would sell OK, but I don’t see how Toyota could sell it so far below the B58 version. More than likely the B48 would still cost like $80k here, which is ridiculously expensive (you can get V8 Mustang with extra performance parts here for that, or the Camaro SS which is imported and RHD converted by HSV). $80k buys you a lot of car, including the BMW M240i with the same B58 engine as the $100k Supra.

I think the B48 Supra just doesn’t make sense here. Too expensive, and not good value for money compared to the other sportscars you can buy here. Heck, you can get into a nice hot hatch like an i30 N with 275HP for $40k... and the 4 pot Supra only has 255HP? Wtf? That engine is ridiculously detuned. Obviously more power is just a tune away, but I’m not keen on blowing my warranty straight away to extract the power (at least 300HP) the B48 should have from factory.

Sad to say, IMO the 4 cylinder Supra makes no sense here. There are no tax incentives to have the smaller engine, and Aussies are prepared to buy cheap fun cars like the 86, or expensive high performance cars like the B58 Supra, but they don’t like expensive mediocre performance cars like the B48 version.
